The Assistant Registry

The Dayle McIntosh Center serves as a link between consumers who want to hire a personal assistant and those seeking employment. Personal assistant care offers consumers an alternative to nursing or institutional care.

DMC’s Personal Assistant Registry is a list of individual interested in employment as personal assistant in employment as personal assistants. This registry is designed as a referral service. You, as a DMC consumer, will be responsible for thoroughly screening – including background checks- anyone f4rom the registry whom you decide to hire.

Using the Registry

When you request a personal assistant, DMC will provide you with names from the registry, along with suggestions for screening and hiring an applicant. You will be responsible for contacting applicants and conducting interview to determine which one is most qualified and compatible. We encourage you to interview as many applicants as possible before making your final decision. We also request that you notify DMC after you have hired a personal assistant.

Determining Compensation

As the employer, you will be responsible for paying your assistant for his or her services. The rate of pay you negotiate with an assistant will based upon the level of service you required and the assistant’s qualification. In addition, you will be responsible for your assistant’ tax withholding, please contact Legal Aid of Orange County at (800) 834-5001

Establishing Duties

Services that personal assistants may provide:

  • Personal care needs: bathing, dressing and grooming
  • Household duties: dusting, straightening, vacuuming
  • Heavy housework: scrubbing, mopping, general maintenance
  • Meal preparation
  • Laundry, shopping and pet care
  • Transportation to medical appointment
  • Help with medication

You should discuss your needs with your personal assistant in order to determine the list of duties. Not all assistant provide all services, so it is important to ask.

DMC recommends establishing a written agreement with your assistant regarding duties, hours, and total compensation.
